Patrick Swayze hospitalised for pneumonia

Posted by on January 9, 2009

.Patrick Swayze, the Dirty Dancing star who is battling pancreatic cancer, has been hospitalised with pneumonia, a television network executive has said.
Swayze skipped a round of interviews scheduled to promote his new crime drama The Beast on the A and E cable TV network as a result of his hospitalisation, network president Robert DeBitetto said at the Television Critics Association meetings in Los Angeles.
A spokeswoman for Swayze confirmed that the actor had been hospitalised in Los Angeles, but declined to provide further details on his condition.
“I’d say five years is pretty wishful thinking,” he told Walters.
Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year and told TV interviewer Barbara Walters this week that he might have only two years to live. I want to last until they find a cure, which means I’d better get a fire under it.
“Two years seems likely if you’re going to believe statistics. .
Swayze is known around the world for his role as the dance instructor in 1987’s coming-of-age movie Dirty Dancing, which inspired hit stage shows in London, Australia and Canada. The majority of patients die within six months.

If you like it, buy it: Gallery hangs out begging bowl for Flemish master

Posted by on December 18, 2008

.The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is taking a creative fundraising approach as it tries to buy a 380-year-old masterpiece.
The gallery is showing Cornelis de Vos’s Mother And Child – a Flemish work on loan – with a sign next to it asking for public donations to help buy it.
The painting comes with a price tag of $1.
NGV director Gerard Vaughan says at that price, the painting would be a bargain.4 million.
“[He] saw the painting.
“I happen to believe personally that the picture is extremely cheap and that was corroborated, in fact, by the director of the London National Portrait Gallery, who was here two weeks ago,” he said. It blew him away, he was bowled over by it.”
Mr Vaughan insists the painting is worth every penny of $1. He couldn’t believe the price and he said that we should be snapping it up. .4 million..
“I think you can tell immediately …”

The Beresford

.
Value Great.
Chefs Danny Russo and Alfie Spina.
Service Suave and charming.
Owner Ashod Nassibian.
Vegetarians A few lovely dishes.
Wine Well-priced range of Italians and
Italian-styled
Australians; 29 by the glass.
Noise Loud and energetic.
Child friendly Come for Sunday lunch.
WHO knew the secret of making brussels sprouts taste good was
not cooking them?
Danny Russo restores honour and pleasure to this much-maligned
brassica – too often overcooked – with one glorious antipasto dish.
Wheelchair access Yes. The vegetable’s natural sugars
are emphasised, along with a slight nuttiness and crunch, to
complement a trio of rotund Nova Scotia scallops, while a roast
tomato and saffron oil dressing adds acidity, depth, colour and
perfume.
The trick to his seared scallops ($22) is the chiffonnade of raw
baby sprouts laced with pancetta.
The new-look Beresford will turn a few people, too. I’m converted, at least to brussels sprouts. Out back is Russo’s 120-seat trattoria with
its irresistible mix of Italian classics given contemporary
class. Its snappy
redevelopment accentuates the pub’s art-deco heritage via a touch
of New York modernism. No big
brown blobs here, just pale, soft chickpea-sized polpette
(meatballs) of truffle-scented chicken and veal mince amid slinky
ribbons of house-made al dente pasta.
Consider the tagliatelle with truffled meatballs ($25).
Gnocchi with a minty pea puree, zucchini flowers and salted
ricotta ($24) is a divinely dainty vegetarian option. The leftover liquor from
cooking the meatballs in the wood-fired oven is the sauce, while
cime di rapa (a fleshy, bitter leaf) delivers contrast.
It’s great to see some of Russo’s signature dishes – squid ink
tortellini with crabmeat and roast tomato sauce ($26), stuffed
rabbit leg ($35) and his fabulous take on zuppa inglese ($15)
crowned with toasted meringue – featuring on the extensive
menu.
It is three years since Danny Russo last entertained us at the
now-defunct Lo Studio and his food is a reminder of how much he’s
been missed. Perhaps
more time cracking the whip in the kitchen might lead to speed,
since the pacing of a meal can occasionally flag.
Russo spends service time on the restaurant side of the kitchen
pass, assiduously courting diners as he explains his food. And in a city too often dependent on
disinterested backpackers, it’s a pleasant surprise to see a more
mature floor under the professional eye of Francesco Zonta. .
The larger, revamped Beresford is a stylish package. There’s a
sizeable beer garden, which acts as a dining courtyard for lunch
and early evenings before the drinkers take over.
If trattorias like this are the recession restaurants we had to
have, then bring on the downturn. I’ve tried hard to spend money
here but inevitably leave very well fed and watered for less than
$200 for two.
Anyone still keen to splash the cash can have some fun with the
wine list peppered with grand Italian drops but, for the most part,
it seems geared to modest budgets.
The soul of the Beresford’s kitchen is its wood-fired oven, which
is seminal to much of Russo’s menu.
To start there’s complimentary house-made bread and grissini and
struzzichini (nibbles) including the fantastic rosemary-scented
wild boar lardo ($9), wilting on the heat of grilled
bruschettina.
Grilled octopus with a fennel and chickpea salad ($19) proves to
be more delicate than the coarse antipasto I imagined. A light,
appealing chickpea puree is the pillowy base for the baby octopus
but its soft texture is courtesy of long, slow, low-temperature
grilling in the oven.
It’s crowned with finely shaved fennel, while a minerally
seaweed dressing adds depth to the appealing combination. Still, I
yearn for a touch of grill char and crispness.
Norcia-style pork salsiccia (sausage, $21) coils atop a dense
lentil stew in an earthenware bowl. This hearty peasant dish hails
from St Benedict’s hometown, which is equally famous for its black
truffles. That luxurious fungus gives this sausage panache, with
truffle paste spread through the lightly cured, coarsely chopped
meat, which also carries a hint of oven smokiness.
Barramundi with porcini and braised oxtail ($32) is Russo’s
Italian take on surf’n'turf, while lamb shoulder in a bean and
olive ragu ($32) is as tender as nonna’s love. The whole of the
latter dish is braised overnight in the oven, with fresh, vibrantly
coloured green and double-shelled broad beans added at the last
minute, along with a dollop of cannellini bean puree.
Desserts bring Russo’s family lore to the fore. In Basilicata,
his parents’ birthplace, the family make a tortellini with
chickpeas, chocolate and dates for festive occasions. Their son
deconstructs that tradition in a chocolate and date tart ($15) with
crushed caramelised chickpeas and a silky milk and olive oil
gelato. The contrast of the defiantly bitter tart with the sweet
legume and light ice-cream is revelatory. You can say the same
about the new Beresford.
