.British talent show judge Piers Morgan defended Susan Boyle after a reported foul-mouthed outburst by the Scottish singing sensation, urging critics to “back off” before a crunch weekend final.
Morgan, one of the judges on Britain’s Got Talent, said the pressure on the 48-year-old spinster had showed during a wobbly performance last weekend and would only increase ahead of the final on Saturday..
Describing her as “an incredibly sweet, nice, gentle person” who had turned into “the biggest star on the planet,” he said: “Anybody who has gone through that. transformation is going to be feeling the most unbelievable pressure.. .
“You could see the nerves almost crippling her on the semi-final show, and I just think it’s time that everyone slightly backed off,” he told LBC radio, adding that she had been incredibly upset this week.
That clip has attracted some 100 million hits on YouTube, brought her celebrity fans including actress Demi Moore and rock star Jon Bon Jovi, and seen her feted in the media from the US to China, Japan and Australia.”
Boyle, who claimed never to have been kissed, went from obscurity to international stardom with a soaring version of I Dreamed A Dream from musical Les Miserables in the show’s auditions.
But she put in a shaky performance of Memory in the show’s semi-finals last weekend, singing occasionally out of tune and out of time, and some fans on YouTube have questioned whether she can handle the weight of expectation.
She has also been interviewed by top US talk show hosts Larry King and Oprah Winfrey.
Police were called to her London hotel the next day after she repeatedly swore at two strangers who taunted her, the Sun said.
– Obscene gesture –
Media reports say she launched a foul-mouthed tirade and made an obscene gesture at the television after Morgan, with whom she has flirted on screen, praised a rival during another a semi-final show Tuesday.
Asked by King if fame would alter her, she demanded: “Why should I change?” adding her celebrity meant “I certainly won’t be lonely any more”.
But despite the reports, Boyle, whose world has turned upside down in just over a month, insists she can keep her feet on the ground.
– ‘Hairy Angel’ –
She was reportedly starved of oxygen at birth and bullied at school.
Despite her newfound fame, unemployed Boyle still lives in social housing outside Edinburgh with only her cat, Pebbles, for company.
But the woman dubbed the Hairy Angel by Britain’s press silenced them all when she opened her mouth to sing – and has not looked back since.
When she first stepped up to the microphone on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent, it looked like the jibes would continue as audience and judges laughed at her frizzy, greying hair and thick eyebrows.
The winner gets to perform for Queen Elizabeth II plus a cheque for 100,000 pounds.
Boyle is bookmakers’ favourite to come out on top in the Britain’s Got Talent final.

Animated Up to lift gloom at Cannes
.The Cannes Film Festival marks a first today when it opens with Up, an animation comedy that may help lift some of the recessionary gloom overshadowing cinema’s biggest and glitziest gathering.
Directed by Pete Docter and produced by Disney’s Pixar studios, Up has already been declared a triumph in advance reviews. It was described by trade paper The Hollywood Reporter as “arguably the funniest Pixar effort ever.
As ever, the big hotels are full and plastered with advertisements for forthcoming blockbusters, party tents still line the beach and there are plenty of yachts in the bay.”
But the tale of a retired balloon salesman and a zealous boy scout will need all the charm it can muster to outweigh a mood of anxiety and caution on the palm-lined Croisette waterfront this year.
Festival director Thierry Fremaux says he believes that this year there will be fewer of the celebrity-driven peripheral events that make Cannes the destination of choice for the world’s top stars and movie moguls. But many of the boats are unchartered, Vanity Fair’s exclusive party has been cancelled and there has already been talk of potential deals falling through and spending cutbacks.
The more restrained mood, however, may help the thousands of accredited journalists to focus on the festival’s core business. This year perhaps we can think about the cinema.
“Around Cannes, perhaps it was just too much sometimes, too much partying.
Wednesday’s opening ceremony – the first to feature an animated film – kicks off 12 days of screenings, interviews, red carpets and revelry in the glamorous Riviera resort. Not the stars and the starlets and the excessiveness of Cannes, but the emphasis on the films,” Fremaux told Reuters Television.
The competition also includes by Pedro Almodovar’s Broken Embraces starring Penelope Cruz, Ken Loach’s Looking For Eric featuring former French soccer star Eric Cantona and Lars von Trier’s horror Antichrist.
– Ledger’s final role –
Brad Pitt is expected in Cannes with Quentin Tarantino’s World War II drama Inglourious Basterds, one of 20 films showing in the main competition and vying for the coveted Palme d’Or for best picture when Cannes winds up on May 24.
Jane Campion – who won the Palme d’Or with The Piano” in 1993 – brings Bright Star, based on the romance between 19th century poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne. .
The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus was the late Australian actor Heath Ledger’s final screen role.
Out of competition, Terry Gilliam has perhaps the biggest movie in Cannes.

Paparazzi seek proof of Brown-Rihanna reunion
.Celebrity photographers are jostling for proof of the apparent reconciliation of singers Chris Brown and Rihanna.
Photo agencies say the first picture of the couple together again, three weeks after Brown allegedly assaulted Rihanna, would fetch at least $US100,000 ($157,000).
People and Us Weekly have reported that Brown and Barbados-born Rihanna, 21, spent the past weekend in Miami.
Francois Navarre, owner of photo agency X17, says a shot of the Umbrella singer and her 19 year-old boyfriend is one of the most sought after in the celebrity news world – right behind an elusive, idyllic family photo of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie with their six children.
Los Angeles prosecutors are yet to decide whether to formally charge Brown over his February 8 arrest on suspicion of making criminal threats against a woman.
E! Online reported that paparazzi in helicopters buzzed over the private estate where they were reported to be staying, trying to get photos.

California law allows prosecutors to charge an individual with domestic violence, even if the couple reunites.
